The Butcher dragged Lily up onto deck. The pirates clapped as their captain tugged his victim along, not allowing her time to find her balance when she stumbled. At the entrance to the forecastle he turned and bowed to his men. “Gentlemen, the lady and I wish you a very good night.” The men cheered again.
The Butcher shoved her into the captain’s quarters. Lily had a quick glance of colorful silks and fine satins spread over every surface. The Muslim women had certainly made themselves at home. And then the Butcher was spinning her around. “Are you scared yet?”
Lily forced her chin up at a defiant angle. “No.”
“You will be, sweetheart. Just you wait. You will be.” She didn’t think his grin could get any more unpleasant, but it did. “I would offer your some brandy,” he continued, “But I would hate to dull your sensibilities. I do so want your sensibilities sharp. It’s more fun that way.”
Lily’s mind was sharp. It was cold and sharp and logical, just like the knife she could feel resting along her forearm where it was tucked up inside her sleeve. He turned his back to reach for the decanter of spirits and Lily saw that as her chance. She whipped the knife from her sleeve and stabbed it with all the force she could at the Butcher’s back.
But he must have caught a glimpse of the movement in the reflection of the brandy bottle. He spun around and caught her wrist just as the knife would have plunged into his flesh. The decanter hit the floor with a crash and shattered.
With a twist, he wrenched the knife from her grasp and his other hand became a fist as it smashed into the side of Lily’s face.
Pain exploded through Lily’s head. It felt like her eyeball on that side should have exploded. She fell back and landed on the bed, gasping for air and just trying to breathe through the pain.
“Well, that was rather unexpected, sweetheart. Most unexpected indeed.” He examined his knuckles as if they could have been damaged by Lily’s face. “I think we’re going to have an interesting evening. But first, I do believe I will fetch another bottle of brandy. And just get rid of this.” He held up the knife. “I wouldn’t want you to think you had any second chances. If you will excuse me.”
He stepped from the room. Lily heard him turn the lock behind him.
She should get up and try to find some kind of weapon, but the pain had revived the rabid panic in her mind. Her cool logic had fled and she could only lie there for the moment, helpless. Everything had gone wrong. She had opened her mouth at the wrong moment and the Butcher had chosen her instead of the disguised Simon. She had moved too soon and failed at her one chance to kill the Butcher. She was now weaponless and locked in a room. The Butcher was going to come back, rape and kill her, and then move on to Goody, Zaira and the maids.
